Jim Wilson & Associates Donates $20,000 to Wilson Elementary School

Wilson Elementary School Donation by Jim Wilson of New Park

MONTGOMERY, AL – Jim Wilson & Associates presented a fundraising challenge to James W. Wilson Elementary School – agreeing to match funds raised during this school year up to $20,000. The school accepted the challenge and, through a series of events, raised more than $35,000. Representatives from Jim Wilson & Associates presented a check to the school on Tuesday.

“We are thrilled,” said Wilson Elementary Principal Meredith Bishop. “Even though we are a new school, we have so many things that need attention. This donation will go a long way to help us provide more services to our students. We are so very grateful to the Wilsons.”

Bishop says the funds will be used, in part, for much-needed upgrades to technology, library books, electronic language translators, additional physical education equipment, and improvements to the playground.

The $20,000 donation is the first in a five-year, $100,000 challenge to Wilson Elementary. Jim Wilson & Associates has also offered the same challenge to Park Crossing High School – their fundraising efforts for the year are still in progress.

Will Wilson, President of Jim Wilson & Associates believes business partnerships are critical to the success of our schools.

“Anytime we can encourage education and the physical well-being of our students we should do so, and this commitment and contribution to Wilson Elementary is a great way to do both,” said Wilson. The ultimate goal is to enhance education and bring together children, parents, and the community to make an outstanding school even better.”

The company presented a check for the $20,000 donation at a ceremony at the school.

Jim Wilson & Associates, LLC, based in Montgomery, Alabama, is a privately owned real estate company specializing in shopping centers, residential real estate investments, offices, condominiums, hotels and mixed-use developments. With over three decades of real estate experience, JWA has developed in excess of 21 million square feet of shopping center space. New schools make New Park popular

New Schools Make New Park Popular

Paul Sullivan of the Montgomery Advertiser wrote a wonderful article about New Park and we wanted to share it with you!  Please read below:

East Montgomery’s New Park is more than 1,400 acres of a master-planned community located off Park Crossing between Taylor and Ray Thorington roads.

The overall master plan consists of a wide variety of single-family residences, retail or commercial sites, assisted living and church locations and a multifamily area, said Anita L. Carter, vice president and associate broker, Jim Wilson & Associates LLC.

“With the vision of our founder, James W. Wilson, Jr., New Park is positioned to be the premier location in east Montgomery for years to come,” Carter said. “Real estate is location, location, location. New Park is the smartest address in town.”

New Park is having an Open House Weekend from 1 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 18–19. Also, the New Park Information Center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, or call 215-9215 for an appointment.

New Park is situated within walking and biking distance of the newest schools in the city — James W. Wilson, Jr. Elementary, Johnnie R. Carr Middle School and the new Park Crossing High School. In addition, James W. Wilson YMCA is located in the center of the neighborhood. Also, near the neighborhood are baseball and softball fields. New Park is just minutes away from east Montgomery’s excellent shopping and dining.

New Park offers new homes starting in the low $200,000s. Its builder’s guild offers buyers the nation’s top builder, DR Horton, along with six premier local custom builders: Elegant Homes, Excel Construction, Hugh Cole Builder, Milton Strickland Builders, Nathan Watson Builder and W. J. Sellers Custom Homes, all with years of experience, Carter said.

”By showcasing our local builders and D.R. Horton, New Park is able to offer a wide variety of builders, creating an appealing streetscape and curb appeal along with comfortable, livable and beautiful homes in a park-like neighborhood,“ she said.

Homebuyers so far represent a cross section of the River Region, and include young families, retirees, military, out-of-towners relocating, and buyers moving within the city because of what the New Park concept offers, and the newer schools.

Carter said many new homebuyers want open floor plans, outdoor living, energy-efficient features, and flexible space and rooms.

”Our buyers are seeking a community that gives them a good quality of life, convenience to work, recreation and entertainment, and a great school system,” she said. “But also a home that works within their budget and lifestyle.”

Carter said New Park is in the midst of a great year, and she expects the momentum to carry into the fall. Phase one of the development is almost sold out, and phase two opened earlier this year and its expansion is already underway.

Montgomery’s new Park Crossing High School featured at National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.

Park Crossing High School, located adjacent to New Park, was featured in July at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.  Below is the article featured on  the AL.com website.

Montgomery’s new Park Crossing High School was featured this month as part of an exhibition at Washington, D.C.’s National Building Museum.  The school features storm shelters designed by Alabama architectural and design firm Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood that can protect students and teachers from winds up to 250 mph.  An entire storm shelter just like the ones at Park Crossing was set up inside the museum.

The exhibit, entitled, “Designing for Disaster,” features buildings and structures around the country that are built to withstand natural disasters including hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and fire.  Because Alabama is the only state to require “tornado safe rooms” to be built as part of all new schools, the state – and Park Crossing High School – were featured.

According to a statement by architects Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood, the shelters are unique because they are smaller and integrated into classrooms throughout the school, making them safer than one large singular space.  They are also enclosed by rebar-reinforced concrete walls, and steel shutters in the classrooms can be closed to block flying debris during a storm.

Park Crossing has enough safe areas to protect 1,200 students and teachers.

New Park Community – Where “Life is a Breeze”

River Region Living Magazine recently published an article on New Park in their June 2014 Issue.  We are so happy with the article, we thought we’d share it with you!

Homebuyers, broadly speaking, can be placed into one of three main categories: the cautious first-timers, the bursting-at-the-seams upgraders and the downsizing empty nesters.

The first category consists of everyone from singles tired of throwing their rent money down the drain to newlyweds to folks whose growing families are packed in like sardines.  Upgraders typically have more than one child and have worked their way up the career ladder far enough to be drawing a higher paycheck – perfect time to move on from their starter home and find a place with a boneus room and a big backyard.  Then there are the empty nesters looking to leave their suddenly quiet single-family homes for something smaller, yet perhaps even more luxurious.

Do any of these describe you?  Great news.

New Park, a 1,400-plus acres master plan community located in the center of East Montgomery has the conveniences of city life, but provides the secluded country setting many buyers are looking for.  It is convenienctly situated between Ray Thorington and Taylor Road.  The overall master plan consists of new homes for every budget and every lifestyle – no matter what stage of life you’re in.

Rarely does a community live up to its marketing slogan but New Park truly does have it all and showcases “the smartest address in town” and “where life is a breeze.”  Inspired by the casual elegance and craftsmanship of the cottage-style home, the community blends Old World charm with sleek modern amenities.  The lush surroundings create a unique, neighborhood ideally located in the central part of east Montgomery.

At New Park, residents are within walking distance of the James Wilson Elementary School, the Wilson YMCa and the new Park Crossing High School.  You’ll also have the ease of being just a couple of miles to the Eastchase Shopping Center.  Living in New Park offers you the conveniences of shopping, entertainment and a diverse selection of dining options.  It’s the perfect combination of quaint living and quick access to all the necessities.  As you know in real estate, it’s all about location, location, location!!

“The wonderful thing about New Park is how many different niches we have,” says Anita Carter, vice president of Jim Wilson & Associates, LLC.  “The variety of housing options is fantastic, but still very affordable.  Ranging upward from the low $200’s.”

“The kind of home you buy should be dictated by your lifestyle and how you spend your time – and where your friends are,” says Anita Carter, who has over 20 years experience selling homes in the River Region.

“This is a community where people want to live because we offer an excellent quality of life.  This community provides a safe, small-town settin, with easy access to Taylor Road and its location allows for a short drive to the hubbub of city living.  This community prides itself on its quiet tree-lines streets, meticulously maintained grounds and friendly environment.”

Life at New Park as described by Anita Carter, VP, “is he result of a community of couples, families and individuals who are looking for camaraderie, security and a strong neighborhood spirit.  Here they find a wonderful place to make friends and enjoy the lifestyle they have earned.”  Families with children are often attracted to the aread by the exceptional educational opportunities nearby, headlined by the new public Park Crossing High School.

2 Teachers From Schools In Montgomery, Alabama Are Up For A Statewide Award

Montgomery Teachers Nominated for State Awards

Two Montgomery teachers have been selected from more than 150 Alabama educators to make the top 16 in the search for the state’s teacher of the year.

Denise Nelson of Wilson Elementary School (pictured on right) and Rachel Dudley of Booker T. Washington Magnet School now will wait to hear if they have been selected for the “Final Four.”

The 2014-2015 Teacher of the Year will be announced at a ceremony May 14 at the RSA Plaza Terrace conducted by the Alabama State Board of Education and the Alabama State Department of Education.

“We’re very proud of both of them,” said Tom Salter, Montgomery Public Schools spokesman.  “They are perfect examples of the fantastic teachers we have in our system.  As far as we know, we have never had wo in the top 16 before.”

“That means we have wonderful teachers.  We have so many good teachers that it’s hard to pick just one, and they had to put two in there.  It’s a great honor.”

The teachers in the “Sweet 16” were chosen from a pool of educators statewide who submitted applications for the Alabama Teacher of the Year Program, one of the oldest and most prestigious award programs for teachers.

Dudley has been the visual arts instructor at Booker T. Washington Magnet High School since 2001 and values creative thought during the learning process.  Dudley has guided students to win prestigious state, regional and national art awards.

She also has modeled volunteerism by working with her students to create murals for the Montgomery Area Women, Infant and Children’s Center, Hutchinson Street Missionary Baptist Church and MPS Children’s Center.  She and her students have conducted art workshops for students who have special needs.

Nelson has been a teacher for 20 years – five years at Wilson Elementary School – and has been recognized with other awards, including Teahcer of the Year honors from Garrett and Wilson Elementary Schools.  She has a National Master Certification in reading through Renaissance Learning and has won the Alabama Power Co.’s Power Educator Award and National Board Certification – one of the teaching profession’s highest credentials.

Alison Grizzle, a math teacher at P.D. Jackson Olin High School in Birmingham, is the state’s 2013-2014 teacher of the year.

Alabama’s Teacher of the Year spends the majority of the school year serving as a full-time ambassador for education and the teaching profession as well as presenting workshops to various groups.  Additionally, Alabama’s representative is a candidate for the National Teacher of the Year.

Park Crossing High School students take part in Thunderbird Flight School

Students at Montgomery’s new Park Crossing High School are working to sharpen their skills to get college and career ready.  It’s called Thunderbird Flight School.

Students took part Wednesday in six mini-sessions including improving study skills, social interactions, long range goal setting and setting high expectations.

“Sometimes you don’t get that motivation from certain people,” says 9th grade student Maya Henderson, “and you need other people to motivate you.”

Henderson adds, “It’s good to have someone to tell you to keep going – especially in high school – so you can achieve your goals.”

Representatives from Auburn Montgomery, The Council on Substance Abuse, PC Media, Trenholm State Technical College and the Boys and Girls Club of America facilitated the sessions.

Ground broken for 2 ‘dream courts’

Ground was broken Thursday at Edward Thompson Park on courts that will soon provide people with physical disabilities an opportunity to receive tennis lessons.

The groundbreaking was for two “dream courts” – courts that will allow individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities to participate in tennis.  It is the result of Dream Court, a nonprofit organization that offers an adaptive tennis program specifically designed so that those with physical or mental challenges to take part in the sport of tennis.

Jessica Weyreuter, a former professional tennis player, and who moved to Montgomery in 2010 to work on her master’s in international relations at Auburn Montgomery, has spearheaded both Dream Court and the project.  Weyreuter personally raised $200,000 from businesses and individuals.  The land was donated to the nonprofit by the city of Montgomery.  Construction is expected to take about four months, depending on the weather.

The tennis courts will be maintained by the city of Montgomery, but will be used by Dream Court.

“When I saw the Miracle League (baseball field) for the first time, I fell in love with that idea and thought we could do something similar,” said Weyreuter, who was born in Germany and raised in Argentina.  “Then a friend of mine had a ski accident and is now a paraplegic.  And I wanted to do something for people with disabilities.”

The location of the courts complement what the city already is involved in, said Scott Miller, director of leisure services for the city of Montgomery.  “This provides an active recreation area to our mentally and physically challenged in the area,” he said.  “There’s a lot of kids in Montgomery who can use this.  It completments what we do in the leisure services in the therapeutic recreation center.”

About Jessica Weyreuter

Jessica came to the United States with a full tennis scholarship at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky.  While there, she was named a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic Women’s finalist, Mid-South conference Academic All Conference, and All American recipient, selected by Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association.
