Local Business to Donate $20,000 to Park Crossing High School

Donation is the first in a five-year $100,000 challenge for two schools

Montgomery, Alabama.  May 5, 2016.  – Jim Wilson and Associates presented a fundraising challenge to Park Crossing High School – agreeing to match funds raised during the school year up to $20,000. The school accepted the challenge and, through a series of events, raised more than $45,000. Representatives from the Wilson company will present a check to the school on Friday, May 6, 2016, during Senior Honor Day at the school.

“We are thrilled,” said Park Crossing Principal Tracy Hubbert. “Even though we are a new school, we have so many things that need attention. This donation will go a long way to help us provide more services to our students. We are so very grateful to the Wilsons.”

Hubbert says the funds will be used, in part, for much needed portable laptop cart that will include 25 to 30 laptops and can be used by all students and teachers in the classroom.

The $20,000 donation is the first in a five year, $100,000 challenge to Park Crossing High School. The Wilson company has also offered the same challenge to James W. Wilson Elementary School and has already presented a check in the amount of $20,000 in May 2015.

The Next Great Americans Bus Tour with Libby Liberty™ had an amazing experience visiting the students from Wilson Elementary School’s earlier this month!  More than 100 fifth graders left the event feeling empowered – and ready to learn civics, character, finances and social studies during the Super Citizen Program.

New Schools Make New Park Popular

East Montgomery’s New Park is more than 1,400 acres of a master-planned community located off Park Crossing between Taylor and Ray Thorington roads.

The overall master plan consists of a wide variety of single-family residences, retail or commercial sites, assisted living and church locations and a multifamily area, said Anita L. Carter, vice president and associate broker, Jim Wilson & Associates LLC.

Park Crossing High School, located adjacent to New Park, was featured in July at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.  Below is the article featured on  the AL.com website.

Montgomery’s new Park Crossing High School was featured this month as part of an exhibition at Washington, D.C.’s National Building Museum.  The school features storm shelters designed by Alabama architectural and design firm Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood that can protect students and teachers from winds up to 250 mph.  An entire storm shelter just like the ones at Park Crossing was set up inside the museum.

The exhibit, entitled, “Designing for Disaster,” features buildings and structures around the country that are built to withstand natural disasters including hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and fire.  Because Alabama is the only state to require “tornado safe rooms” to be built as part of all new schools, the state – and Park Crossing High School – were featured.

According to a statement by architects Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood, the shelters are unique because they are smaller and integrated into classrooms throughout the school, making them safer than one large singular space.  They are also enclosed by rebar-reinforced concrete walls, and steel shutters in the classrooms can be closed to block flying debris during a storm.

Park Crossing has enough safe areas to protect 1,200 students and teachers.
